MVTR Meeting
Events
Several MVTR riders finished out the competition season by
participating in the Dan Salomone Memorial Enduro. Jimmy said that it was a
great event although he had some bike issues he also mentioned some
interesting hills and some two-way traffic encountered where some of the
riders had not completed a section before the “fast guys” were starting in
on it from the other direction. He noted that he had houred out by check 6.
Rick summed his day up in saying that he had a blast. Donations and a raffle
were combined towards a scholarship fund (I did not hear a total but did
hear that it was quite substantial).
John, Jim, Kirk and Jeff were among the MVTR riders who took part in
the Pilgrim Sands Trail Riders TOYS for TOTS ride(s). There were in fact 3
rides to choose from that day, in addition to the annual trail ride Gordie
and crew hosted not one but two Adventure rides varying in both length and
degree of challenge. Jeff brought back to MVTR the plaque for “Best
Represented Club” which topped off a good day for another good cause.
The MVTR Challenge took place at Jeff’s in Windham. About 25 riders
and perhaps half that many spectators enjoyed the day and a BBQ. Jake was
back from his season of contesting the GNCC series to take the title for
fastest lap although Duane wasn’t far off the pace.
Dan, Art, Tim and Scott started their Thanksgiving Day celebration
with a few hours cruising the trails at Hop-Ev.
In addition to those mentioned rides was one in Meriden, CT last
weekend that attracted more than 90 riders. I did not catch the names of
MVTR riders who went there.
MVTR Events 2010
John and Tuck have both signed of “understudies” to take over their
respective Trail Boss positions when they retire after the upcoming 30th
Anniversary of the New England Classic Charity Trail Ride. The Trail Boss
positions for next year’s Rocky Mountain Weekend will be Shawn for the Hare
Scramble, Andy with the Jr Enduro and Tammy officiating the PeeWees.
NETRA 2010 Sanctioning
The 2010 Sanctioning Meeting should be underway some 1,300 miles
north of here as I compose this summary (don’t feel bad, it’s only about 50
degrees and has been raining a lot). In order to fit into the National
Schedule for 2010, the Sea Coast Trail Riders need to hold their Enduro on
22 August, this may leave “their” traditional weekend available and we are
hoping to be able to move the Rocky Mountain Weekend to it’s place on 7 & 8
August. The NETRA Board of Directors has looked favorably on a rule change
(NOT submitted by MVTR) to enact a No Competing Event status for the weekend
of the New England Classic Charity Trail Ride. In order to become official
it must be approved by vote of the membership at the Annual Meeting in
January. Rick has submitted a rule change to reduce the number of
“unclaimed” trophies at enduros; currently clubs must purchase trophies for
several classes, which are sparsely if at all contested. His suggestion
would provide for some consolidation.
Upcoming
The first Hare Scramble of the 2010 season is just 5 weeks away! The
Sea Coast Trail Riders Winter Scramble will take place in East Kingston, NH
near/at the intersection of routes 107A and 108 on January 10th.
Much of the course has been literally raked of leaves so as to allow the
ground to freeze before the event. Parking will be at a premium so Motor
home space is unavailable.
I am several hours late on this item; Jim has a Hop-Ev trail repair
project scheduled for 09:00 on Saturday. He is looking to recruit at least 4
able bodies to get the 4 wheelers and trailers over to the park and meet up
with Gary (and his tractor) to get some of the larger holes filled before
the ground freezes.
JD has announced that Arizona was just too much fun to not warrant a
return trip this winter. He will be leaving on 17 February for “about” a
month and has space in the trailer for another 4 or 5 bikes.
According to Clipper, Peter Starr is still interested in our helping
out with promotion (and venue?) for a fundraiser showing of his movie “Take
It To The Limit” to benefit Prostate Cancer Research. No date has been set
at this time.
4 November 2009
November MVTR Meeting
The meeting was called to order at 19:18. Tuck needed to get to
another appointment so he was given the floor to bring up issues for
consideration at the upcoming Comp. Committee Meeting.
Competition
Committee
Several
items were brought up for discussion; the most talked about was the issue of
throw-aways/number of events. The consensus of members present was clearly
that the number of events, (Hare Scrambles, not so much Enduros) was
becoming burdensome on recreational riders who still wished to be
competitive. The time and money needed to compete in the series was taking
a lot of the fun out of it, particularly when events are scheduled on 4, 5
or more consecutive weekends. It was clearly understood that there are a
number of riders who are at a point in their lives where they can and wish
to race every weekend. In that respect, there was little desire to try and
cap the number of events held. There were several throw-away options
discussed, in the end, the most popular was that if a riders scores from 75%
(rounded off to the nearest whole) of the events held (not scheduled
or sanctioned) were used to calculate final ranking, it would allow for more
flexibility. In this way, a rider could ride every event (except the one
worked) and have his best scores count while another could choose to compete
when and where he (or she) desired and if he rode 75% he would not be
summarily eliminated from year-end contention.
Other items brought forward included, possibly changing the number
from the current 10 to instead allow the top 20 finishers to receive
championship points in an event. The question was raised as to whether there
needed to be a NETRA rules change in order for an Enduro run under National
rules to qualify for NETRA points. The issue of the Work Rule and use/need
for a letter of intent was brought up, there currently appears to be no
NETRA oversight, it falls to the individual Trail Bosses as to when and
under what requirements a Work Credit is issued. Also brought up was the
number of classes in Enduro events. Should engine displacement really the
determinant for classes? Should there be less displacement ranges, i.e.
combine 200 and 250 classes?
The Sea Coast Trail Riders have been successful in their bid to hold
a National Enduro in 2010. In order to fit into the National schedule it
will be held on 22 August 2010 instead of their traditional second weekend
of August. If we follow tradition, MVTRs events for 2010 will be the
Classic on 5 & 6 June (dictated by the New Hampshire Motor Speedway pretty
much immovable) and Rocky Mountain Weekend on 24 & 25 July. There had been
some preliminary talk last year about perhaps swapping dates with Sea Coast
to allow more time between the Classic and the Rocky as well as breaking up
the current run of a month of HS followed by a month of Enduros. We will
have to wait and see if this looks like a reasonable adjustment during the
Sanctioning Meeting.
MVTR members having an issue they would like to see discussed or
changed should get it written up and forwarded to Tuck or Rick before
the Comp. Meeting!
Events Ridden
At the Black and Blue, Cody was awarded video fame, if not for
his technique in negotiating the tires, certainly for his recovery. Rick
finished 9th OA and described the course as awesome, Art had a
great time while finishing 3rd B Senior, Mike reported that some
Cs missed the A-B cutoff and Andy just had a ball.
Steves fall adventure ride out of Henniker got rave reviews, all
hoping that it is on the 2010 schedule.
Trail Work
Jim organized a work party at Hop-Ev in the rain last week.
Gary brought over a tractor and the group hauled screen and riprap out onto
the Stark Pond trail to fill some of the severely eroded sections. Still
work to be done out there,
Jim is currently pretty tied up on
weekends and looking for a few good men to head up some weekend work
parties, contact
him if you can help out.
Peter recently rebuilt a section of trail on Caverly Mtn. From the
pictures on NEDB, it would appear that it would now stand up for quite some
time.
Upcoming Events
The Endurocross in Winchendon and the A1A Connector
dual-sport ride were both upcoming at the time of the meeting, being
scheduled for what is now, last weekend.
Still to come is the PSTR Toys For Tots ride on the 15th,
which will include a dual-sport ride and two available Adventure Bike loops.
In addition to gathering toys for those in need, this ride raises $$$ which
become part of the donation brought annually by PSTR to the Classic.
MVTR riders who make the trip down should remember to let them
know where you came from and how much we appreciate their efforts.
Also on the list for upcoming events is the re-rescheduled Dan
Salomone Memorial Enduro (formerly the Gypsy Moth) on the 22nd
of November. Another of the events for a really good cause, try to support
this one as well!
Other Stuff
Progress
continues in the Jericho Lake Park area, connections to surrounding trails
are coming along. If not already, there should soon be links to Success Pond
and the Berlin-Gorham-Randolph rail trail.
Ray has discovered some route sheet holders, which allow for opening
and adding notes while on the trail. He asked for and received permission to
order some for use by our Trail Bosses.
There was an OHRV death during a charity trail ride in Pawtuckaway
State Forest. Details were limited at meeting time, it was reported that she
was trying to avoid others stopped in the trail and struck a tree. It is a
tragic reminder that we rarely know what may be around the next corner.
7 October 2009
MVTR October Meeting
The October meeting began
after the 2010 Classic Committee adjourned and the pizza arrived,
approximately 19:15. Before moving to Rides and Events there was a
discussion on tires and pressures. Tom described himself as someone who
never thought which particular brand/model of tire used made very much
difference, recent experience changed that dramatically. For a recent race
he had available some tires he had not previously tried, they were NOT
described or specifically intended for New England riding (i.e. ruts, rocks
and roots) but he figured a tire is a tire and these are brand new, have
to work right? After stopping several times on his first lap because the
handling was scary he made it back to the pits where tire pressure was
lowered to a point much below normal and the event was eventually
finished. We now have another tire snob, funny how one bad experience can
bring about a whole new outlook. Before leaving the realm of tires several
positive reviews of the new Scorpion MH Hard were heard for front
tire use.
Rides and Events
Tuck, Dave, JD, Mark and Pete
were among the MVTR riders who made their way to ride the GNCC in
Unadilla. Pete managed a second place finish and Mark edged out a couple
of 20somethings to bring home a plaque, word is that they were camped nearby
and may have over celebrated the night before, no word/evidence as to
whether or not Mark encouraged said celebration as part of his race
strategy.
In enduros, the Gypsy Moth
and Black and Blue remain on the upcoming schedule. Rumor has it that
Sea Coast Trail Riders will be holding a National Enduro next year, many
details to be worked out but it looks like a GO!
The Hare Scramble
season has wound down. An unofficial club consensus is that there were just
too many events and most were losing enthusiasm toward the end. Tuck asked
that anyone considering submission of Rules Changes get them written
down and forward them to our Competition Committee members as soon as
possible so that they can be reviewed and questions asked if needed.
As competition wanes for the
season, there is time for some recreational riding. To that end Steve, Mike,
Jim, Mark and Tuck were among the MVTR riders who participated in the
Buckfield International 2 Day Ride. The format is along the lines of a
shortened Colorado 500. 50 riders in 3 5 groups (based more or less on
ability/speed) rode about 100 miles of trail on Saturday from Buckfield, ME
to Sunday River in Bethel where they enjoyed dinner and bench racing. Sunday
saw a rain shortened 50 60 mile ride back to the start.
Ray and Tuck paired up for
Jays Ride, an invitational 75-mile trail ride which is followed up with
a barbeque and live band. This year saw about 35 riders enjoy the day.
Hop Ev
An MVTR work crew was recently
out in Hop-Ev, several worked on clearing some blow downs while the rest
hauled gravel out on to Hanglider to stabilize some erosion control grid.
Once the grid was taken care of it was decided to make use of the remaining
gravel by filling around several washed out culverts in the area.
Jim
has several other projects to get done in Hop-Ev, he has some time for
mid-week work but needs some MVTR members to step up and coordinate a few
weekend work parties. Contact
him
if you are available.
The 2010 New England Classic Charity Trail
Ride
The first Committee meeting
has just concluded. In 09 there was a competition event, the Laurel City HS
scheduled for the same weekend as the Classic. The conflict caused a
reduction not only in money raised for the charity but also club members
available to help with the event, most likely it caused a reduction in both
for the BTR as well. Tom went to last weeks BTR meeting to request that
they consider not rescheduling for the same weekend next year. The letter he
presented is reprinted here.
(This is an outline and summary of a verbal presentation offered to the
Berkshire Trail riders by Tom Levesque at BTRs October meeting)
Good evening I am Tom Levesque, President of MVTR
Committee member for the Classic
NEDB SQUERACING
Ive asked Jason (Jason Meyers, President BTR) to allow me to
speak to you with respect to the conflict between our events and how the
Laurel City event impacted the New England Classic Charity Trail Ride.
Thank you Jason for giving us this opportunity.
Conflict of Events: (Conflict of
2009)
The Laurel City Youth and Adult Hare Scramble
Vs
The New England Classic Charity Trail Ride
What is the Classic?
A Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Event Consisting of:
A two-day Youth ride
A two day adult trail ride
A one-day big bike ride
And a Saturday night banquet
Why to not sanction the Laurel City against
the Classic:
1st the financial impact
2008 donations
$138,000
2009 donations
$117,000
At the bottom of the letter Lisa
(Lisa had drafted a letter to BTR that was
passed out to those in attendance) can show a loss of
$11,000 directly attributed to riders who participated in the Laurel City
event. I know of another 14 16 competitors accounting for $2,000 - $5,000
in pledges. So, around $15,000 was lost (2009 compared to the
previous year).
I understand that the Laurel City
event benefits the local volunteer Fire Department. Our Rocky Mountain
Weekend donates to the Alton Fire Department and MVTR donates to the
Dunbarton Rescue, which assists when a call comes from the Clough Riding
Area, which MVTR maintains, St. Judes Hospital, The Cancer Society and
Easter Seals. So, we all share the need to give back to the community but
the Classic is on a different level.
Beyond the financial implications of the
Classic competing with Laurel City: This year there were:
19 Hare Scrambles
17 Junior Enduros
15 PeeWees
= 51
Competitive events
The Classic offers kids 10 16 two days of
recreational riding. No pressure, just ride and have fun. There is no other
venue, which offers this relaxed environment.
Even competitors enjoy the two days
of riding with friends and family with no check points or laps to count.
Weve heard from no less than 5 father/son (or daughter) duos that would
have liked to be at the event together.
The Classic isnt an MVTR event;
its a New England Trail Riders event. The Sea Coast Trail Riders run the
Kids Classic. Pilgrim Sands holds events specifically intended for raising
money for Cystic Fibrosis and the Classic. Many New England riders look
forward to the annual event.
2010 will be the 30th Anniversary of the
Classic.
In speaking for CFF, MVTR and many
New England trail riders, I would ask you to explore event dates other than
June 4th and 5th.
Following the presentation was a question and answer session:
How many riders do you think you lost because of the conflict?
(The difference in rider numbers from 08 to 09 was 30-60, economy had some
effect but the general consensus was lost ridership as a result of Laurel
City).
Would you give up the Rocky Mtn Weekend date?
(Tom took the political low road in responding he was not the trail boss and
that decision would be theirs. Editors note; to do over again, he probably
would simply had responded, No. As the discussion continued in that vane
however, he agreed with BTR on the importance of varied events for a Club to
bring in and keep club members, and conceded because of that, MVTR would not
give up its Rocky Weekend.)
There were several other question or comments but were aimed at NETRA, the
schedule and riding in general.
Among the items to come from
the committee meeting are: The dates for next years 30th Anniversary Classic
are June 5th and 6th 2010. The event schedule will be carried over from 2009
in so far as, Northern Loop on Saturday, Southern Loop on Sunday, both
running in the same direction as 09. There will be one substantial change
for 2010, due to the fact that KTM is now the sponsor of the AMA Dual Sport
Series while Suzuki remains the Classic title sponsor, the Classic will not
be a part of the AMA Dual Sport Series. With NETRA now being able to provide
insurance for New England events we no longer have to require AMA membership
for those participating in the Classic. (Ed. note Most of us still
recommend and support maintaining AMA membership)
Several items still up for
discussion are: How to better publicize the Kids Classic, this had not ever
been an issue in the past, available space being filled pretty much every
year just by word of mouth. In 09 however there were many youth riders
chasing points elsewhere and the event ran at about 50% capacity. Talks,
work and negotiation are underway to bring a well-known keynote speaker to
highlight the 30th Anniversary Banquet.
The Rest
There will be an Adventure
Bike Ride on Monday (Columbus Day), meeting for breakfast at the pancake
house and leaving from Jims around 0900. Yes, that has already passed, from
the reports and pictures that I have seen it was a great time, one to surely
join in on should it be repeated next year. Thanks Skip.
The Bettencourt Collection will be
going up for auction in November to allay medical expenses. Fans of Classic
bikes should be sure to look into this further, not much had been posted at
the time,
Wood
is handling the auction.
The new MX track at New England Dragway is up
and running! Several club members have plans to check it out.
2 September 2009
September Meeting
The September meeting will be the
last of the year on Summer Schedule. Ever shortening days will soon not
provide enough daylight to ride very late. Beginning with October, meetings
will once again commence at 19:00. Tonights meeting was called to order at
20:12 by President Tom with pizza and quite a few members in attendance
(vacations must be over).
With a number of New
England Rough Riders having recently returned, it seemed natural to begin
with ride reports, more specifically the Colorado 500. Along with
everything else in the country, attendance for the 500 was down this year
and average age was correspondingly up at 46. This was Tucks 21st trip and
there are still a few a few riders who have made all 34 years! Aaron said
that you pretty much have to see it to fully appreciate it, riding included
750 miles and altitudes up to 13,000'. Art is
now an enthusiastic convert to trials (rear) tires. He has posted pictures
from the ride on
mvtr.org.
They described the weather as great or perfect. Cost while not insignificant
at $3,000 to 3,500 includes support vehicles and some pretty nice hotels.
Tuck reminded all not to expect a break if ticketed in Aspen, not that he
was but someone has to pay for those Lexus 300ES patrol cars.
In less far reaching events, quite
a few MVTR riders made their way to the Noble Woods events which
included an Adventure Ride, Enduro and Turkey Run. Having been previously
taught a harsh lesson by Mother Nature, there was a lot of new single track
in the enduro, specifically laid out on high ground. In the Turkey Run there
were reportedly some riders who left early and caught the pre-runners, this
may have contributed to a few arrowing issues. The Big Bike Ride had about
17 riders (double +/- last year). Both days provided perfect weather (well
overdue after the year of No Summer).
About 30 NETRA riders were
among the 180 participants in the Speedsville Enduro, Rick, Illya,
and Kevin among them. Rick reported it to be kind of slippery. Brian rode
CATRA. A couple of us headed down to Somers. There has been a
Hare Scramble every weekend last month. Hoosick was pretty greasy,
speeds/laps were set for dry, it wasnt. 7 minis made the first lap, 4 or 5
survived all 3. Scott ended up in an ambulance (somehow I missed recording
which event); a relatively cool, damp season caught him off guard on
hydration when it turned out to be 90. Dwayne
saw his name posted as having overalled at Richardsons Farm, which
unfortunately was changed after the first protest. JD reported that a
13-year-old rider (shorter than him) took B-Hipoint. Lastly, several riders
(not ours that we are aware of) were reportedly taken out by a sweeper
last weekend, just shows (IMHO) that there are more qualifications for the
job than being able to ride fast. Mark told us about going out to visit
family in NY and ending up racing an SR 500 (that he helped build in the
90s) in an AHRMA race at Paradise Speedway in Geneva. Coupled with the
practice hes been doing at the last few Ice Box events, he may be ready
to take on Rochester when Bike Week comes around.
There has been planning underway
to get a National Enduro in northern New England next season. Rick
did not think that there was enough room at Rocky to get a loop of more than
35 miles laid out. SeaCoast Trail Riders are seriously working toward
hosting it; thus far both the State and towns are quite supportive of the
idea (must be nice!).
An article of interest from the 29
August issue of the Concord Monitor was passed around. It reports that a
hiker has been hiking, clearing, mapping and selling maps of trails, on land
that he neither owns nor has permission to use. This has resulted in the
closure to ALL of some 12,000 acres in the Ossippee area.
Clough/Hop-Ev has been
closed several times recently by the Corps Of Engineers (it is their land,
they are ultimately in control of all that happened there). What remains
unclear at times is whether it is the trails or the roads that have been
closed. The Board Of Trails website can be a day or two behind in showing
the closures and sometimes it appears that the COE only wanted to close
access to some of the lower roads so riders are allowed but it is
understandably confusing. The BOT is reportedly trying to get the COE,
themselves and F&G all on the same page to help prevent future issues.
This months projects will include
cleaning, inventorying and organizing the work trailers. A new Map Handout
is being prepared. A system of marking trail name and mileage is being
finalized for posting and we need to get some gravel moved out onto
Hanglider Trail and applied. Notification should be going out by email and
on NEDB when Jim picks the dates.
Suzuki has signed on to be
the Title Sponsor for the 30th annual New England Classic Charity
Trail Ride!
A busy weekend is approaching;
choices will have to be made with the Rocktoberfast enduro on the 12th,
Unadilla on the 13th, the Ammonusuc Ride on the 12th and 13th along with
Rice-O-Rama and the Lars Anderson Euro bike events.
Improvements are continuing in the
Jericho Riding Area in Berlin, connections are being made to nearby areas
and camping on-site (15 sites) should be available next year. No single
track (yet) it is still recommended for relatively new dirt riders or those
who want to get some off-road time on their big bikes.
Work continues to clean up the
winter storm damage in Windham, there should be some Wednesday riding coming
up, contact
Bob.
Al Walters, one of the originators
of the Leon Dube Ride (now the Classic) recently lost his mother.
Several members visited Dave Frasier at his new house in Lee, MA.
No pictures were reportedly available of some incident that involved a Dodge
being towed by a Ford.
Bruce
5 August 2009
August MVTR Meeting
The August meeting began somewhat late at 20:30.
The delay having been a result of an overrun of the Rocky Weekend debriefing
it seemed like a good idea to start with a summary of that event.
Rocky Mountain Weekend
The weekend seems to
have been well received by the riding community, particularly appreciated
was the tremendous effort to keep up with the weather caused need for
several course changes, which kept things moving rather than allowing huge
stoppers to develop.
Reports from the various
Section Leaders
(i.e. Trail Bosses, etc.) follow.
Andy reported that only one section of
hill really deteriorated during the PeeWee ride. For some reason it seemed
that more of the sweep riders had crashed than PeeWees.
Rick thanked everyone for the help
and reminded us that we would be needing to recruit a new Trail Boss for
next year.
He suggested that operationally it would be a big help
to have a Mini Trail Boss in place more than 24 hours before the event. He
utilized some terrain that he might have normally avoided, but since repairs
to the section were already scheduled as a result of the Classic there was
no reason not to include it.
Shawn also put in a thank you for all the
help, most especially the tremendous amount of hard work on event day
keeping the event moving with constant trail reroutes. He also noted how
effective the broken bike recovery units had been in saving time. Peters
version was the most successful (sorry Tuck) of the weekend.
Art had no one to thank (jk), he put it
all together to provide both sights and sounds throughout the weekend. From
Saturday Nights collection of stills, helmet cam clips and video under a
bug and rain free, moonlit sky to Sundays music and PA he kept us all
entertained.
Tom masterminded the first ever (only?)
Granite State Challenge. Shawn Matalonis joined at the meeting and collected
both his B Class trophy and the new Fly helmet that he won in the
Challenge Raffle.
In other news and
reports, Mike rode BTRs Mudslinger, his description was It is what it is
and he continues to see it as a personal challenge to ride.
Hop-Ev had been closed
due to high water but is now reopened. Now that the clubs other events
are in the books it is time to get started on some projects there. Early on
the list will be to get the trailers hoed out, re-inventory the tools and
get the comp. Equipment stored separately. Jim said that our proposed
maintenance projects have been approved for funding. Work should begin soon.
Upcoming events to note (OK, I
took too long again getting this written, the first three already happened
and the Somers Turkey Run and Adventure Ride will be done before this gets
on-line heck I am typing this while IN Somers) would have been the Noble
Woods Enduro, Adventure Ride and Turkey Run, the Indian Ridge Hare Scramble
and an NECC Hare Scramble.
1 July 2009
MVTR
July Meeting
The
July Meeting began at about 20:15, immediately following the conclusion of
the Rocky Mountain Weekend committee meeting. Turnout for the pre-meeting
ride was decidedly light (2?), owing perhaps to fact that it has rained on
at least two of every three days since the Classic.
The
New England Classic Charity Trail Ride
The 29th
running of the Classic is now history. It is often said that it is better to
be lucky than good, looking back at the event, those that ran it were indeed
good. If one considers the state of the national economy and the weather we
have seen since the event, we (all of MVTR and CFF) were both very
successful and more than a little lucky! The reports on the various sections
that make up the Classic follows.
The Northern Loop seemed to be improved
by reversing the route from years past, which not only changed the scenery
but also got more of the riders into and through lunch earlier, this allowed
more of them to avoid being shortcutted(?) around the ever popular Devils
Den section. There was (only?) one injury, which was serious enough to
require an ambulance ride. The morning sweep riders reported that they had a
pretty easy time of it.
The Big Bike Rally was ridden by (about)
24 riders. This year they were routed so as to join the Trail Ride for
lunch, as a (very slow) sweep rider I cannot attest as to just how that
worked out, by the time we arrived the whole setup was gone, without so much
as a wrapper to indicate that they had been there! Without riding the Hero
sections (well, one of them, backwards with a subsequent retrace of the
non-hero around it) I showed 172 miles on my GPS by the time I returned to
the Speedway. The rally had been shifted to Saturday this year in an attempt
to allow riders to enjoy both it and Sundays Southern Loop whose arguably
less challenging trails include some of the State Parks, which are
definitely unavailable at any other time of the year (except when well
covered with snow).
The Kids Classic was for the first time
ever, not even close to being sold out.
As of the pre-registration cut-off date (May 23rd)
there were only 11 riders. Jay and Matt held registration open until
literally the last minute possible and were able to up the number to 24 (53%
of capacity).
The kids that did ride were happy, well fed
and dead tired by the time the bus returned them to the Speedway each
afternoon. Reportedly there were only a couple of bikes that remained on the
trailer overnight after Saturdays ride the rest all required some
maintenance!
This years Southern Loop was designed
with several bailouts allowing those with time (or aching body)
constraints to sample some of the best trails in NH and still make it home
in order to show up for work on Monday morning. The ride as always includes
trails in some sensitive areas, where vocal minorities try each year to
have us excluded. In order to attract as little unwanted attention as
possible this Loop has gravitated to using the route sheet exclusively to
show the turns rather than arrows and using ribbons as a confirmation that
you did indeed make the correct turn. While this system is becoming popular
in other parts of the country its acceptance by New England riders is
coming along rather slowly. A very big plus on the Southern Loop this year
was the new Lunch Stop. It would be hard to include enough nice things to
say about it. Wonderful location - terrific food a cold water supply to
replenish hydration packs music - smiling, helpful, volunteers making it
all work, all of this as a first time effort by someone who wanted to make
things better. None of this should be construed as any criticism of the
Saturday lunch stop, rather just to point out what a huge change this is
from Sundays traditional grab something to eat at the convenience store!
The Bozos have succeeded in making more
of an impact on this years Classic. Perhaps it is a short attention span
thing, maybe if the line SPEED LIMIT 30 MPH ON
DIRT ROADS. PLEASE GO SLOW THROUGH FARMS AND POPULATED AREAS.
You dont want to be the one who screws this up for everyone else. Was
moved from the bottom of the 2009 CLASSIC
RIDERS NOTES to the top we would be all set but
I dont know about that. We seem to be attracting a larger number of AA
street riders, as has been commented on by other riders, local Law
Enforcement and the general public!
There are as always a number of things which we
think we can improve upon to make next years
30th New England Classic
(June 5th and 6th, 2010) the best ever. The Classic
Committee will be meeting in the near future (dont ask how I know that) to
address changes to be made and look for ways to exceed all expectations. It
is hoped that we can perhaps avoid having another scheduling conflict such
as the one, which hurt the Kids Classic so badly this year.
The bottom line is that
through the efforts of American Suzuki, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, MVTR,
the Northern New England branch of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the
riders and all the untold other volunteers, $117,000 was raised to help fund
Cystic Fibrosis research and move us closer to the day when CF stands for
Cure
Found!
Continuing with a
Classic week tradition (used to be a Bike Week tradition) there were two
MVTR trail rides held following the Classic. On Tuesday (the beginning of
the month of rain) about a dozen riders headed out of Jim Nashs place for
a dust free loop through Washington and back for a BBQ, which Jim said
netted another $345 in donations toward the Classic. On Thursday, Steves
ride out of Jolly Roger saw two groups of 8-10 riders each head out for a
loop of about 85 miles.
OTHER EVENTS
Three successive Enduros have
been either postponed due to weather or cancelled all together in the past
month. The Anthony clan traveled down to participate in the last GNCC
however the Classic review ran this evening well past their bedtime and we
will have to wait until next months meeting to get a report. Some 50-60
riders Including MVTRs JD and Peter headed to VT to ride the NECC Hare
Scramble.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN
WEEKEND
MVTRs version of Ride with the Devil, the
Rocky Mountain Weekend is fast approaching on July 25th and 26th.
Saturday will see the Jr. and Sr. Enduro head out on an 08:00 Key Time to be
followed by the Mini, Big Wheel, Women and Girls classes at 13:00. The
PeeWee 4 and 5 riders depart on their Scramble at 1400 to be followed by the
PeeWee 1, 2 and 3s at 15:30. On Sunday the Mini, Big Wheel and Girl classes
will take to the Scramble track at 08:30, the Novices head out at 11:00
while the Amateurs and Experts will start at 14:00. In addition to holding
all of this on just one weekend there is something else new. The first ever
Granite State Challenge will combine placement from each days events to
determine who are the top riders in AA, A, B, C, and Mini for a separate
trophy and lots of bragging rights. Pre-Entries are due no later than 21
July 2009, for the Enduro they must go to: Rick Claxton 95 Prescott Rd.
Epping, NH 03042 and for the Hare Scramble they must be submitted to Lynne
Anthony 99 Candia Rd. Chester, NH 03036. There is no separate entry for The
Challenge.

Last Minute information @
NEDB.com
and MVTR.org
IF there is any bright spot to the plight of
these last three endures it is that the attendance at work parties to
prepare for Rocky Weekend is up. There is in fact one happening right now as
I type this (5 July). More help will be needed to pull off this ambitious
schedule of events, every MVTR member as well as friends and family can be
of great help, particularly on the weekend itself, dont be bashful!
OTHER STUFF
A newsletter should be hitting your mailbox in
the next week. If it doesnt show up, I am going to say that there is a
really good chance that it is YOUR fault! Lots of work has gone into
bringing our contact list up to date but we need to have your up to
date information to include it. You also need to pay your dues on a somewhat
regular basis to be retained on the roster. So, if you do not get a
newsletter in the next week or so, one of the previous conditions probably
exists. Either one can be remedied by contacting
Art.
There is work to be done at Hop-Ev. No work
parties are planned until after Rocky Mountain Weekend is concluded but once
the park reopens from the current flooding work could be done on a day at a
time basis. Trimming face slappers and/or improving signage can be done by
one or two riders (provided you are SURE
that you are on the correct trail location). Contact
Jim
to coordinate trail work at Hop-Ev.
3 June 2009
MVTR June Meeting
The June meeting got underway with VP Jon
presiding at 20:15, after the last CFF meeting prior to the Classic Weekend
came to a close. The first item on the agenda was the upcoming New England
Charity Classic Trail Ride.
Classic
First off was Pres. Toms letter which he had
posted on NEDB about how the scheduling of Laurel City was affecting
participation at the Classic, in particular the Kids Classic.
We then heard from Northern Loop TB John, that
this years ride would be run in the reverse direction from recent years in
an effort to get riders into lunch earlier and get them back on trail to
ride the Devils Den and Rocky Hero sections. A last minute change was being
made to the Route Sheet, ongoing construction at the Speedway would make
access to Gues Meadow Road dangerous so the start was going to be moved to
the Main Gate with an immediate reset needed to get everyone on the right
mileage.
Assignment of pre and sweep riders had been
completed. Quiet Hours at the Speedway are 20:00 to 08:00; we will be
adjusting the hours of Tech Inspection to agree with them. Another item has
been added to the auction (semi long explanation), Broc Glover, the Golden
Boy of MX some years back has a 6 year old who has CF, as part of the
fundraising he has been doing for the CFF on the west coast he had allowed
his name to be used for a wine. Through the generosity of the winery we will
have 2 bottles of Broc Glover Golden Boy Chardonett in the auction and
will be extending an invitation to Broc to come east and join us for next
years 30th annual NECCTR. Pre entries are up slightly from years past with
the very notable exception of the Kids Classic which is all by pre-entry
and down almost 50%.
This years Southern Loop has lost about 10 miles of pavement but gained
about 3 miles of trail in Pawtuckaway State Park. Including Hero sections it
will be 105 miles. New this year is a lunch stop provided by a previous
Classic rider who has a family member with CF. There will be two bailouts
after lunch, the first heads back to the speedway by way of mostly trail and
totals about 70 miles, the second includes more of the good stuff
including two MX tracks (recently groomed for everyones enjoyment) and
totals about 85 miles. The route has been thoroughly ribboned, riders
will be advised once again that this is a route sheet ride; the
ribbons serve as confirmation that the rider has successfully followed the
route sheet.
This years BBR will run somewhat in the reverse of last years, the biggest
change being that it is on SATURDAY and will have a joint lunch stop
with the Classic Trail Ride(provided you arent sweeping and arrive at 13:30
not even an empty wrapper left).
Rocky Mountain Weekend
Several riders
and TBs have been out in Alton scouting in preparation for the Rocky Events.
A new section has been planned to avoid a frequently troublesome muddy
uphill and a bypass of Ryans Bridge is being worked out. Once the Classic
is in the books work parties will begin in earnest to get the courses
pinned down and ready to ride.
HOP-EV
Trail
Administrator Jim headed out on opening day and found the trails to be
mostly good except for the ever present face slappers (which always increase
in number as the leaves come out). He said that there is lots of signage
repair/improvement yet to be done. He has talked to F&G about increased
enforcement of the one ways and such but they agreed that the signage needed
to be in place before that could happen.
THE REST
Jims Tuesday
after the Classic Ride will take place on the 9th, starting with breakfast
at the Pancake House around 07:30 or 08:00 and leaving his place at about
09:30 for a 70 +/- mile ride ending with a donations welcome BBQ.
Steves Thursday after the Classic Ride will be
on the 11th, leaving Jolly Roger about 09:30 (Yeah, I know both of these
rides and the Classic are over before I finished this summary and posted it,
just another reason to come to the meetings and learn about it all
firsthand).
There was discussion of the Enduros and Hare
Scrambles so far this year, seems that each event has had some degree of
controversy attatched but for the most part the majority of the riders
enjoyed each event.

1 April 2009
April MVTR Meeting
Summary
The April meeting began at about 19:30 following
the conclusion of the Rocky Mountain Weekend (RMW) Committee meeting. As an
April Fools joke (?), the unusually large crowd had pretty well eliminated
any traces of the pizza before most of the RMW committee got to it. Pres.
Tom distributed a list of MVTR Representatives and their contact
information, having just attempted a mass email to club members, Art noted
that there was some information, which needed updating. Hopefully we will
get the needed updates in place and get the list onto our website. Tom also
mentioned that he was working on getting a newsletter finished and out this
week (many of us received it on Thursday). If you have not received one then
your contact information is most likely incorrect in the club database,
contact
Art with corrections.
Another reason for not getting one might be not having renewed (i.e. paid
dues) membership for several years. Those members whose membership has
recently expired should have still received the newsletter and there should
be a red notation on the address label noting when you were past due
(although my 1/09 notation does not coincide with my 2/10 card). We really
would like to have an up to date roster with contact information (this would
NOT be posted in public), the question is how to get the information, those
who come to meetings mostly have up to date info but that leaves a large
number of members whom we can not readily contact to keep them apprised of
club happenings.
Rides
Rick, Art, Kevin, Jim and
Illya were among the MVTR members who attended this years Sandy Lane Enduro.
Awesome and tight were included of the descriptions of the event, which drew
592 riders (at 5 per line, thats at least 119
lines). Some 40-50 New
England riders took part.
The Greenbrier Enduro will take place this
weekend (OK, now its last weekend). No word on MVTR riders who might
attend.
Among MVTR riders, Zack took second place in his
race at the PSTR Short Course HS on 3/29/09. The 7-14 year old riders rode
on a 10-mile loop described as rough, rocks, roots and water.
Legislative
Asked about the current status of our
lobbyist, Jim B responded that he is currently hired on a per issue basis.
There is concern that this is not sufficient and we should still have him on
a full time basis.
The NETRA Board of Directors has assembled a
compendium of information about the recent federal Child Protection Law
which has effectively banned the sale of bikes and ATVs (along with parts
for same) intended for use by children 12 and under. A letter has been
drafted to all New England State Representatives asking them to work to
overturn this action.
Classic
The Northern and Southern
Loop Trial Bosses are about ready to hit the trails and assess damage left
by the ice storm, last years tornado and another long New England winter. No
doubt there will be announcements for clean-up work parties in the not too
distant future. The next Classic Committee meeting will be next Tuesday
(pretty much right now as I compose this). Among changes to this years
Classic are, the moving of the BBR to Saturday, the inclusion of a lunch
stop on Sundays Southern Loop and a routed bailout right after Sundays
lunch that will get riders with a long journey home back to the start by
1400 with very little pavement along the way. Entries are already coming in
for the Kids Classic, this is limited to riders 12 (will be sometime this
year) thru 16 and the number of openings is strictly limited by available
bus and trailer space so apply early to avoid disappointment. Once again
NETRA has waived their membership requirement (yes, you still
should be a member),
AMA membership is
required for the event.
Rocky Mountain Weekend
The RMW Committee met this
evening (more members welcome!)
and things are shaping up. The (relatively) firm schedule calls for an
Introduction to Enduros school and Sat. sign-up to take place on Friday
evening. Saturday should see a 0800 start for the Adult/Jr. Enduro on a
closed course with a Known Control format with Special Tests. The Mini and
Big Wheel Enduro should get underway at 1300 and the PeeWee Scramble is
planned for a 1400 start on a separate 6-8 mile loop. Sunday sign-up will be
available on Saturday evening, hours TBD. Sunday it is planned that the
Minis will start at 0830, the Novices at 1100 and the Experts at 1400.
A very big change this year
will be inclusion of The Granite State
Challenge! Those ambitious, strong, tough,
brave, (dumb?) enough to compete in both
the Enduro and the Hare Scramble will have their scores from the two
events combined to determine the AA, A, B and C winners for the
weekend.
Other Stuff
As a result of Brians, well earned retirement
as Administrator of our HopEv maintenance, Jim M. has volunteered to take
on the role. There will be (was) a meeting at 1930 in Tucks Garagemahal on
Thursday for those interested in helping MVTR continue its stewardship of
the trail system. The general plan is to try and spread the load by having a
crew of Trail Bosses to oversee individual trails and determine their
needs allowing Jim to concentrate on the overall planning and office/paper
work which must be completed for anything else to happen. Field Work will
of course still require the efforts of our many MVTR (and other) Friends of
Hop-Ev volunteers.
Although winter is (very)
slowly releasing New Hampshire from its icy grasp, many MVTR members are
still thinking snowmobile. Tom has promised to have an account of the
Border to Border Easter Seals ride ready for the next newsletter. Peter
told us about his exploits in riding the Magalloway Bowl and Saturday April
4th will
see the First Annual Pats Peak Hill Climb.
JD told us about the joys of riding AZ during
(all of) the month of March, including incurring a whole hour of rain one
night. He was visited by a number of other New Englanders while there and is
definitely planning a return trip next year. Start planning soon if you want
to join him.
Several local riders including Bob L. and Peter
A. will be heading down to the Hatfield-McCoy riding area for the first week
in May.
Information is up on the
club website about the UNH, fundraiser, golf tournament to be held on May 8th.
There will be (sorry,
was) a 2-3
hour work party on Sunday in Windham.
Freedom Cycle will be (again sorry, did) having
an Open House on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This will include the Can-Am
Spyder demo fleet (they are really cool to ride, different but fun). In two
weeks the ATV demo fleet will be visiting.
It is officially State of
New Hampshire Mud Season; as such the trails at Hop-Ev are closed and will
remain so until the official end on May 23rd.
4 March 2009
March MVTR Meeting
The March meeting of the MVTR got underway at
19:15 with a discussion of some of the legislative events recently passed
or up for consideration.
First on the list was the
Federal Law, which took effect on 12 February 2009 banning the sale of
ANY product
intended for use by those 12 y.o.a. or under, which contains more than 600
ppm of lead. While we might want to think that this was a backdoor effort
to prevent children from being involved in off-road riding, it appears more
likely that we were included in the broad sweeping protection movement
that followed last years discovery that large quantities of lead existed in
many of the toys being imported from China. As lead is routinely utilized in
the manufacturing of many parts included in dirt bikes, atvs and sleds the
manufacturers of those products are now in the position of either certifying
them as safe or figuring out how to modify them so as to not include parts
which exceed the 600 ppm limit (which in and of itself appears to be an
arbitrary number not actually linked to a known danger level). In the mean
time, most (all?) of the products have been removed from showrooms and may
not be offered for sale. Currently our representatives to NETRA and the AMA
respectively are contacting them to see both what they are doing in response
to this law and what we should be doing at the club level. There is a
national movement to have riders appear at their respective state capitals
on 13 March 2009 in protest of this (unintended?) consequence of the law, as
of meeting time we did not have specific details as to when and where the NH
group would be meeting. There are also some on-line petitions available
attempting to get the off-road industry exempted from the law (there seem to
be few if any instances of children crewing on their dirt bikes and
ingesting the available lead).
Another item for consideration
was the hearing scheduled to have taken place on the 2nd to
consider allowing OHRV use on some roads in the north country. This
would be a move toward making the region around riding areas (like the new Berlinpark)
more rider friendly to improve the quality of the experience and help
promote tourism for the area. It has been done in many other parts of the
country with success. Unfortunately, the storm on Monday prevented any MVTR
members from participating in the hearing and we do not know if it may have
been in fact postponed or if not, how it transpired.
There has been a
movement to increase the price of OHRV registrations. The snowmobile clubs
have requested this to increase the money available for trail maintenance,
grooming and enforcement, they will in fact be seeing a 30% increase. For
the rest of us there will be a $1 increase in the cost of registration,
which will be added to the agent fee.
Events
There should be information appearing on our
website about a fundraiser golf tournament to be held on 8 May 2009. This
would be to benefit UNH (brought forward by Luciens daughter)
Tom gave us a recap of the MVTR team journey to
again win the longest ride-in at the annual Easter Seals Ride. They rode 401
miles, much of it in sub zero temperatures. Details can be found on NEDB and
should also appear in our next newsletter.
The CLASSIC
This years 29th edition of the New
England Charity Classic Trail Ride will take place on 6 & 7 June 2009. Much
of the event will follow the proven recipe of past events, this will be once
again an AMA sanctioned and insured event (consequently AMA membership is
still required, NETRA is again forgoing their membership requirement in
order to maximize the funds raised for Cystic Fibrosis (Thank You). Suzuki
is once again our Outstanding Corporate Partner and will be providing a DRZ
400S as the Grand Prize in the drawing as well as much other support. This
years registration packets have already been mailed to those who
participated last year, first time riders will need to get registration
packets by contacting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at:
1-800-757-0203
or
http://newengland.cff.org/trailride
MVTR members whose offspring have not previously
participated in the Kids Classic can also get registration packets for
them through the above location. If you would like more specific information
to determine if the ride would be appropriate for your child, contact the
Trail Boss directly at:
mailto:JLEES@GSINET.NET
As always, space in the Kids Classic is
solidly limited by the capacity to transport riders and their bikes to the
daily riding areas so get your registration in early!
Rocky Mountain Weekend
The Rocky Mountain Weekend will be held on 25 &
26 July 2009. The ambitious schedule calls for a mini enduro @ 0800 on
Saturday with the Jr. and adult enduro beginning @ 1000 on a closed course
(bike registration not required). Sunday will be Hare Scramble day. Planning
is underway to figure out how to combine scores from both days to determine
who will be the winners of the Granite State Challenge. Members of
the RMW committee (and those who wish to be included) will be meeting
@ 1800 prior to the 1 April (yes, Aprils Fools
Day, almost seems appropriate for those attempting to hold an enduro and a
HS on the same weekend doesnt it?) 2009 MVTR Meeting.
Hop-Ev
Our long overworked Trail Administer Brian
Harjula has announced his resignation from the position in order that he
might devote more time to his family. This leaves a huge void, which we need
to fill with either an individual or more likely a committee (it is more
work than should be expected of one volunteer). Several have expressed an
interest in being part of the solution, those wishing to be included
should be at (or make it known in advance) the April meeting.
Other Stuff
There will be a Hill Climb on 4 April 2009 at
Pats Peak Ski Area (sorry, NO bikes, snow mobiles only).
Bear Brook has been providing some GOOD riding
(perhaps not so good this weekend).
29 March will be the first Hare Scramble of the
season and the Sandy Lane in NJ will kick off the enduro season. Winter has
to end sometime!
4 February 2009
MVTR FEBRUARY MEETING
The meeting began at 19:19 with the arrival of pizza and a report on the
changes to event insurance. With NETRA now able to get its own insurance
there is hope that the same company will consider underwriting policies for
NETRA Clubs to cover their equipment. It has been difficult (impossible?) to
find a company willing to cover the ATVs and trailers and the individuals
towing/operating them to perform trail maintenance and support at events. We
have been depending to a large extent on the not universal custom of a
trailer being included automatically under the policy of the tow vehicle. We
have been more than willing to purchase the insurance but unable to find it,
this would provide great peace of mind to the Club Officers (i.e., those
likely to be named first should an accident/incident occur) and many
volunteers who use the equipment through the course of the year.
NETRA ANNUAL MEETING
John reported on the recent attempt to pass
another piece of noise legislation. He reminded us that although AMA
membership is no longer mandatory to enter NETRA Events (it
is still required to enter our Classic
which remains not only an AMA event but is the largest club level charity
fundraiser) riders should consider that the AMA is the best support of our
sport at the national level and worthy of continued support.
Tom reported that there would be an increase in
the NETRA efforts to support the recreational rider. This year there will be
a raffle of a KLR 650 with tickets available to those who participate in
the Turkey and Big Bike rides. They are looking at a more thorough tech
inspection at recreational rides and the awards program.
EVENTS
SEACOAST SNOW
SCRAMBLE
The Seacoast Trail Riders worked right up to the
Saturday night of their event to groom/prepare the trails. Unfortunately the
overnight arrival of 8-9 of fresh snow changed them from Great to
something less. Many reported that there didnt seem to be any combination
of helmet/goggles that worked for long (and just about everything was tried)
SNOW RUN
According to Rick a new Trail Boss changed
things around somewhat, still the same terrain and trails but different at
the same time. The trails became somewhat soft and rutted which resulted in
lots of paddling by the 90 or so riders who participated.
NEW YEARS(?) RIDE
Mark brought a cooler and ladle in for lost and
found apparently all that was left behind from the mountain of crock pots
and other food sources that accompany his and Boos annual get together
on the ice. About 40 bikes and 100 people showed up on the always-short
notice (depends on how the ice is) informal get-together. The participants
donated $700, which will be matched by MVTR and forwarded to the Norris
Cotton Cancer Center. Oh yeah, that cooler did contain an adult beverage
and some diet soda, the soda is still available.
OTHER RIDE(ING?)
REPORTS
Bear Brook has been providing some good riding
for those willing to put on studded tires and brave the cold.
Clough (Hop-Ev) is
reported to be hard work.
A reminder to our
snowmobiling members, the Mt. Major Snowmobile Club supports and maintains
the trails around Rocky Mountain (think Classic and Rocky Mt. Weekend) if
you are looking for a club to join please consider theirs.
Bob advised us that
there would not be a RIDE email issued unless predicted conditions rate at
least a 5. I do not have his email address at hand (Art can no doubt
provide it); make sure that you are on his NOTIFY list to be included in
the winter rides.
There is talk and
consideration of Seacoast Trail Riders and MVTR putting on a Winter
Scramble Series. The reasoning being that (a) it is a way to ride during
the winter and (b) the most common reason given for not entering the Snow
Scramble is that it is too expensive to buy a set of studded tires in order
to ride just one event. Seeing how much work has been involved in their
event and the fickleness of New England weather, it will take some new
blood not already entwined in our existing events to step forward and take
on this challenge.
There will be a ROCKY MOUNTAIN WEEKEND
Committee meeting on 4 March 2009 prior to the regularly scheduled MVTR
meeting. I am not sure how prior this would be, 1800?
This is year two so no one should be surprised that all
COMPETITORS need to make sure that they are listed on the NETRA database in
order to get series points. You must have a current NETRA membership
AND a current NETRA
Affiliate (i.e. MVTR) Club membership to compete for end of season awards.
Check your status on the NETRA website, if your data needs correction
contact Art to get the information updated.
JD reported that he
would be riding in the Phoenix, AZ area in March. Riders who will be in the
area (or want to be?) and want to hook up for some off-road adventure should
contact him.
The MVTR Snowmobile contingent is on the loose again.
The plan (what plan?) is to get underway at 0600 from Townsend, MA on the
morning of 5 February, heading northerly to the Canadian Border then back
through Pittsburg and Dixville to claim the honor of Longest Ride In at
the Easter Seals Weekend. A more in-depth report can be found on NEDB in the
MVTR forum. Those who survive, will no doubt be joined by other MVTR members
who wish to participate on the 21st in the annual Cystic Fibrosis
Ride (i.e. Austins Ride).
Those who enjoy the
MVTR sponsored trail system in Hop-EV should be prepared to help out this
spring. There is reportedly much tree damage from the December ice storm.
The state usually does the initial prep of the trails prior to opening but
their resources are limited, we will probably asked to step up and help get
the trails safe and ready for the (hopefully) May opening.
5 November 2008
November MVTR Meeting
The pre-meeting, Rocky Enduro
wrap-up, MVTR/SCTR, Comp/Sanctioning meeting ran long. Consequently, the
November meeting began @ 19:13 with most everyone already quieted down by
quantities of pizza.
A review of recent past and upcoming events
found MVTR members actively riding in MX, HS and Enduros. Ryan
headed up a team effort and Duane was an
ironman, class winner at MotoMayhem. Jon listed off a number of MX events
but didnt say if he actually rode (or planned to ride) any of them. Andy,
Cody and Dave were among the riders at the latest PSTR Short Course event.
The Black and Blue Enduro finished out the season (depending on State OK to
run Rocktoberfast) with a course similar to last years event, they have got
it down to only about 6 miles of the trail being on state land (less to be
shut out of) and had 30 rows or riders.
The end of the HS season is fast approaching
with the Hard Knox scheduled for 9 November. If the state does reopen the
Western MA State Forests, the rescheduled Rocktoberfast will finish out the
Enduro season on 16 November.
The Rocky Mountain Enduro was reviewed. 102
riders signed up with 20 +/- new NETRA memberships processed which leads us
to believe that the all off-road format may indeed bring more riders into
the sport. Rick had done his best to make it a rideable event where B and
C riders could finish and timekeeping (i.e. thinking would be required of
the A riders, a tropical deluge on Saturday night certainly undermined those
efforts. A common reply to riders asking advice about riding their first
enduro is Just ride it like a trail ride, dont worry about time keeping
the first time. We apparently had quite a few first time riders who took
that advice to heart and didnt even look at the rules ahead of time. A
substantial reset way through the first loop was often ignored and many
burned the following check point by a LOT, they still got their day of trail
riding in but might have posted respectable scores had they not DQd
themselves early. Mike, Dave and JD were among our members who rode the
event, Dave and JD are among those who NOW know what a reset is.
There is a Work Party scheduled in Alton on 8
November 2008 to replace a bridge at Bergerons. The standard meeting
time/place (08:00 @ Alton Circle McDonalds or 09:00 @ the property) apply.
Note, since I am late at getting this summary assembled the time has already
passed, see:
http://www.nedirtbikes.com/content/m_145223/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm - 145223
for more information.
The 2009 NETRA Event Sanctioning Meeting and
Competition Committee Meeting will be held in early December (the first
weekend?). In preparation for that, it was time to review our event plans.
The (recent) past Classic Trail Bosses have all stepped forward to take on
another year of toil and trouble (they love it! (I hope)). We are looking at
combining our two Rocky events into one big(ger) weekend! The plan would be
to add the Enduro onto the Saturday program, thereby moving it from late
October (potentially cold and dark) to July. Theoretically, there is a
hole in the enduro schedule at that time, the event would retain its all
off-road format so as to NOT be sending riders out onto tourist covered
roads. We should be able to reduce some of our infrastructure costs,
mostly in terms of the amount of TIME that club members spend away from home
and family to prepare for the event(s) and also in having just one (well,
plus the Classic) long weekend to put them on instead of two. It would still
require lots of work but the hope is that it would reduce the total number
of days that need to be worked.
An idea in conjunction
with this is to possibly have some form of Ironman Challenge for riders
who choose to compete on both days!
Rick told us he is
submitting a rule change request that would allow for a modified version of
the AMA Enduro Rules. He feels this would allow competitors to ride with
their friends throughout the day (keep on the same minute) but still address
the (speed) situations that Brand X rules were instituted to deal with.
A discussion as to how
to best entertain the concept of the Work Credit Rule was begun. There
appear to be as many interpretations of the rule as there are clubs. Some
clubs require a substantial commitment as a condition of membership (beyond
the scope of the NETRA championship points rule) and others accept almost
any effort as sufficient to qualify for the NETRA credit. Our ongoing trail
bosses are going to look at various options and should be bringing an MVTR
version to the membership for review in January.
Somehow missed during our
discussion of upcoming events was the Toys for Tots Ride in Assonet, MA on
16 November 2008. For those who are not yet aware this day serves as two
fund raising events! Toys donated at the event are distributed to those in
need for the holiday season, in addition donated cash will end up at the
CLASSIC as part of the annual PSTR donation to OUR event.
Dont miss out on this opportunity to support those who support us!

October
MVTR Meeting
The October meeting began at a somewhat delayed
19:30, there was hope that attendance would be improved as we got closer to
20:00, figuring that not everyone got the message that we were now on fall
(cant bring myself to call it winter just yet) schedule.
It may have been the daylight-induced
curtailment of the pre-meeting ride or the (unfounded) fear that there
wouldnt be enough pizza but in the end only about 35 members were present.
First on the agenda were reports of who had been
riding where. Among the events of the last month in which MVTR riders
participated were:
The Buckfield
International Invitational 2 Day Trail Ride is
set up in a similar format to the Colorado 500. Mark, Dan, Tuck and 33
others left Buckfield on Saturday in led, ability (or perhaps chosen
speed) groups to make their way to Sunday River where they enjoyed a
banquet, night sleep and breakfast before returning to Buckfield on Sunday
by way of different trails. Tuck observed that some of the AA level riders
turned out to be C level drinkers, which may have had something to do with
all of the groups arriving at about the same time!
The Hawk Ride
is an invitational ride dedicated to Tom McAlpine. For 2008 there were 36
riders who enjoyed the 80-mile trail ride along with entertainment by the
Kings Highway band and a BBQ by Goodie Coles. Proceeds will go to cancer
charities. Only one injury was noted, in his own (sort of) words, Bird had
to wobble home on a flat tire because it was less painful than walking or
fixing it.
Despite rain prior to the event, conditions at
the Ammo, i.e. the Ammonoosuc River Turkey Run
were described as good traction, perfect temperature and little standing
water.
Rick reported on two enduros. The Mudslinger
(now Hell in the Hills)
was said to be nasty,
substantial rain added to tough terrain yielded a total of 8 official
finishers. Finishing 7th,
he said it was one of the toughest events hed ever ridden. Diametrically
opposite was Newark,
a long, 7 hour ride to get there but great riding, even for the C riders.
He earned a 6th
there.
Pete reported that
Unadilla was like riding a
roller coaster on a dirt bike. He was among the 450 or so riders in the
morning race, earning a 5th
in class and 45th
overall. All agreed that the dirt and layout were great for the morning
race; the afternoon race was an entirely different story. Heavy rain turned
much of the track into a mudbug for the afternoon riders.
In off road news:
NHATV announced the
1st
Annual Wal-Mart/Childrens Miracle Network ATV Ride.
The ride will take place on 25 October 2008 at Pawtuckaway State Park in
Nottingham, NH. No word in the announcement regarding use of bikes, a
description of the trails as being mostly suitable for younger & beginner
riders might indicate it not being challenging for an experienced dirt bike
rider but perhaps a great way to enjoy a nice fall day with the family. For
information packet & Pre-registration email Clinton Robinson
ccrobin@wal-mart.com.
Umbagog ATV riders were close but unsuccessful
in their bid to obtain permission for OHRVs to be operated on some roads in
Coos County. This is a trend that is passing in some areas of the country
where the value of OHRV recreation to the communities has been realized. It
will probably return for reconsideration.
We were joined for the evening by Jay McGrath,
known by many in the off road world as the voice of Jolly Roger Motosport
Park and the owner of the MX track that many have sampled while riding day 2
of the New England Classic Charity Trail Ride. Jay is now Sales and
Marketing Advisor to
Western Power Sports, Inc
and brought many samples of new, innovative riding gear and helmets for dirt
riders (helmets for snowmobile riding as well), in addition he brought
samples of some new tires they are producing. When not working in the power
sports industry, Jay is a driving force in the
Hawk Ride mentioned earlier.
Ray told us about some of the BBR type riding
available in VT through
CCC of VT. They have
about 940 miles of back/dirt roads route sheeted.
John advised us that the Classic Committee would
be meeting later this month. If you would like to work on the committee,
contact Lisa @
no-new-eng@cff.org.
Last but most certainly not least is our
Rocky Mountain Enduro!
Several work days have been held and much of the work is done but it is not
too late to join in the preparation for our 26 October 2008 event.
Tuck
will be leading a select contingent into the wilds of Alton @ 08:30 on
Friday morning. Rick has several projects to undertake on Sunday 5 October
2008, all available members are requested to meet at the Alton Circle
McDonalds @ 08:00. There will also be a (not yet scheduled) work party over
the holiday weekend and final touches on Saturday the 25th.
Lots of check workers, general help, tech. and some sweep riders needed on
event day. Two all off-road laps (52 miles) have been route sheeted, Key
Time is 09:00, Brand X rules. There will be a Saturday afternoon sign-up
available between 16:00 and 17:30.
3 September 2008
September MVTR Meeting
Summary
The pizza
arrived at 1943 and was quickly enjoyed by all present, particularly those
who have been at the recent past meetings where the offering has ranged
from slim to none. President Tom was out of state for work; Vice President
Jon took the reins but lacked the experience to get the meeting underway
while most had their mouths full. He was in truth a part of the steady line
of MVTR members at the parts counter hoping to repair what they broke at the
Grassy Knoll in time to partake in the Ammo, Stateline or Alton work
party this coming weekend (but I thought, my version sounded better).
The meeting began at 8:00 pm dull (20:17) with a
report on the pre-meeting ride. 21 miles of fast and dusty trail was run
by a number (missed writing down how many) of club members. I have to wait
for official word but think that next months meeting may be moving back to
a 19:00 start time. Pre-Meeting riding may continue but with a sunset at
18:25 next month the riders should be in early enough, but it might
be close.
Grassy Knoll
A number of MVTR riders traveled down to Somers,
CT to partake in the Grassy Knoll Hare Scramble over the holiday weekend.
Dwayne was again on the podium with 2nd A Senior. JD said he
wasnt at the top of his class and Pete explained how some strategy
decisions in his first ever HS moved him down to 4th in class.
Rocky Mountain Enduro
Our enduro is moving along toward its scheduled
date 26 October 2008. The Labor Day work party brought out 10-12 volunteers
to clear trail and help burn it in (the afternoon reward for coming out on
a holiday to work). There is still some trail to be ridden and cleared of
blow downs and face slappers but most of the trail cutting is complete. It
was 25 miles with a newly cut 3 more added in it is getting close to 60
miles for the two-lap day. All the new stuff is reported to be ride able
regardless of what we may see for weather, the older stuff is The Rocky,
not smooth and flat but no stoppers reported. Not mentioned in the flyer,
there will probably be a gas truck or trailer positioned out on the Bergeron
property
(about mid-lap) for those who arent sure about
finishing a 30-mile lap on an MX bike. More work remains to be done both
before and during the event. This Sunday (0800, @ Alton Traffic Circle
McDonalds) there should be a group working (unless we are in the midst of
Hurricane Hanna, Ed. Note). Our host has again requested some help in
removing rocks from a new hayfield date TBD. Lots of help needed on event
day to run/help with sign-up, tech (mostly sound), checks and sweeping (got
a good headlight? Sunset @17:45 that day).
Colorado 500
The New England Rough Riders once again made
the pilgrimage to the dirt Mecca of Colorado. This was Tucks 20th
trip to the 500 which was appropriately honored, word is that his custom
painted commemorative helmet will be preserved for ceremonial use in a
display case rather than abused while trail bossing the Classic. The riders
rode 700 miles over 5 days (not including a side trip some made to Moab).
Art and Rupert (this years rookies) reported on the experience from the
first timers perspective. Chip described almost being knocked off the
trail in a place where off the trail meant a 2,000 drop. One of our
groups had the honor of being joined on Friday by Malcolm (YES,
that Malcolm) who requested to ride with them. Neal was acknowledged with a
Perseverance Award, including special commentary. Neal, I think we need
helmet cam footage or at least pictures to fully appreciate the Jeep
incident. It sounded as though all were ready and waiting to make the
journey again.
Legislative
Peter Jacobs has stepped forward to replace Dave
as our representative to NHOVA. Thank you.
Jim is still trying to determine whether or not
MVTR can have its own representative to the Bureau Of Trails. If it is
allowed, Tuck will consider filling that spot.
Upcoming
Things to look forward to in the next month:

And dont forget to mark your
calendar NOW
for the Rocky Mountain Enduro on 26 October 2008.
6 August 2008
MVTR August Meeting
The August meeting began a bit late, following
up the Rocky Weekend de-briefing. It also began without PIZZA; apparently
you cannot make an order to Domminos that simply calls for a delivery on
the first Wednesday of every month.
The meeting did however begin with
pictures of Talin (Ta-leen, if I got the pronunciation correct) OConnor,
born to John and Lisa on 20 July 2008 at 8 pounds and 3 ounces.
Events:
While waiting to get the
Rocky Trail Bosses disengaged from the parts counter (due to riding the
Berkshires?) for a report on our event we went on to reports from several of
our members who rode the BTR event this past weekend. Commenting were David
an A-Vet rider who took a 10th overall and Dwayne, whose 15th overall ride
has moved him into the points lead as Senior/Expert. The New England terrain
and weather yielded a course that included rock gardens, boot pulling mud
and lots of overheating, i.e. a good enduro course.
Rocky Mountain Weekend:
54 PeeWees got a good workout
riding more woods than most had experienced (prior to last weekend).
Comments were overwhelmingly positive but we have some ideas of where
improvements can (will) be made.
In the Jr. Enduro, we had 48
riders with the Minis working their way through 2 laps (10.7 miles each) and
6 checkpoints while the Juniors rode 4 laps of New Hampshires finest
terrain. Checks were set up and speed averages increased incrementally each
lap to let the riders learn some basic time keeping skills. Most were up to
the challenge, a few however, learned that there is more to it than cranking
the throttle by accumulating substantial burn penalties. In response to
comments we will be looking at how to make the pits more centrally located
(and control access, it isnt a social gathering spot) as well as perhaps
routing the course to allow parents to see their riders more than once per
lap. Another idea under consideration is to add a Sportsman Class to the
Jr. Enduro as a way for more riders to try out the enduro concept.
The lack of equipment to
provide movies was a disappointment for some who have enjoyed them in years
past. A few apparently attempted to remedy the lack of entertainment on
their own with unsanctioned (and unwelcome) fireworks. No wildfires were
started in the process and we are hopeful that this act wont prevent our
holding a Rocky Weekend 2009, time will tell.
There were 270 riders who
turned out for the Hare Scrambles. Deteriorating, weather induced conditions
(a common theme of late) on the course turned, what had been 22 minute laps
in the preceding weekend tests into 30+ minute laps for the lead riders by
the end of the day. In fact leading riders in the morning had lap times
substantially equal to the top afternoon riders. Seeing this the Trail Boss
and his associates would have liked to shorten the race to 5 laps but found
their hands tied by the current rules in that regard.
The Opening Ceremony and the
presence of supporters, Red Bull, Factory Connection and HRP were all
subject of much positive comment. Hill was mostly successful in his assigned
task of keeping track of Tucker, reportedly only losing him once and that
for a short time. Now, the question, can we top it next year?
ROCKY MOUNTAIN ENDURO
Our Enduro will be coming
up on October 26th. Trial Boss, Rick has been multi-tasking while working on
the HS event, keeping an eye out for trails and terrain which can be worked
into the enduro course. Work parties will be starting in the next few weeks,
trying to get as much ready as possible before the enduro schedule becomes
an every weekend thing. Watch your email for developments.
NOBLE WOODS WEEKEND
The weekend is FAST
approaching, 9&10 August 2008. This year offering literally something for
everyone with the Enduro and Big Bike Rally on Saturday followed by the
Turkey Run on Sunday. Offering great trails, lots of scenery, good food and
always terrific company this should be on your must do list. Already too
late to pre-enter but make every effort to attend and support SeaCoast Trail
Riders as they always support us.
OTHER STUFF
Three riders ventured forth on the
pre-meeting ride. Substantially WET they considered it a conditioning ride
for the Ammo.
The next Newsletter should
be coming out in September and as always member contributions are welcome.
Submit your story, tech tip, etc. to Jim at jmmccart4@yahoo.com
for inclusion.
MVTR may be instituting
its own Club Rule regarding work credit. Voluntary event participation
has not been all it could be so it MAY be time to mandate how competition
Work Credit is awarded. If you have an opinion on this please forward it
to the MVTR Competition Committee (no, we dont formally have one but
consider it to be the Trail Bosses and Officers) for consideration.
Paperwork is already
underway for the 2009 New England Classic Charity Trail Ride. The dates will
be 13 &14 June 2009, mark your calendars now.
NETRA can now get event
insurance for almost the same rates as they are getting it from the AMA.
This allows posing the question as to whether or not they should do so,
which would permit those who ONLY ride NETRA events to not purchase AMA
memberships and thus save some money.
We need to appoint a new
representative to NHOVA. Dave has been our representative for quite a while
(when not flying at Opening Ceremonies) but would like to retire. If you
have the time and interest, please contact Pres. Tom at
Squeracing@aol.com.
Another reminder to competition
riders, in order to get series points you must have a current NETRA Club
Membership. Check your status on the NETRA website and if you find a problem
(with club membership ONLY) contact our membership director, Art at ktm450riderns@verizon.net.
(remove the "ns" for No Spam)
We are looking into
our representation at the State Trails Board as to whether we are
represented by association or can have a club representative.
Once again we are in the
presence of greatness. The newest AMA magazine has coverage of the Colorado
500 (street) ride. Tuck says they did their best to keep him off camera but
daughter Morgan made the article.
Bruce
2 July 2008
July M V T R Meeting
Rocky Mountain Weekend
Only a few weeks left and much still to do in preparation for
the event. While the event officially takes place on the 26th and
27th of July there is plenty to be done between now and then. We
are looking to all MVTR members along with their friends and families to get
it all done!
There are work parties
scheduled for the 8th, 12th, 16th, 19th
and 20th to get the course ready. Something on the order of 1
miles of trail needs to be cut to connect some existing trail sections. We
are trying to work to both the letter and spirit of the NETRA Club Work
Rule which calls for riders to work the event that their club puts on, in
that vein the Trail Bosses have been politely (we hope) declining many of
the requests to work our event by members of other clubs. One consequence of
this is that we will really need all of our Hare Scrambles riders to
step up and help out!
At the Rocky Weekend itself,
help will be needed during all hours between mid-day Friday (probably
all day really) when we start collecting signatures on the event waiver and
Sunday evening when the last of the grass track stakes are collected and the
trash (yes, it IS carry-in, carry-out but.) is gathered. In between
we need people for sign-up, AMA and NETRA membership, tech inspection,
first-aid, back up scoring (I hear nothing ever goes wrong with the
electronic system), course marshals, pre-riders, sweep riders and a hundred
other jobs.
Among those other jobs will be
parking! Like last year we are limited to how much land is available. The
need (he has to make a living too) for the landowner to utilize much of the
field for a (paying) hay crop leaves us without the seemingly endless space
of the past. Large trailers and RVs will have to be parked perpendicular to
the road and side by side in the order of their arrival. We just dont have
room for people to set up their own compound or save spaces for friends
who may be arriving later.
Highlights of the weekend
should include: crews from Red Bull, HRP/Scorbordz and Factory Connection.
The Junior Enduro and the PeeWees ride on Saturday and the full-on Hare
Scramble is on Sunday. The status of the traditional Saturday night movies
is unknown, still hoping to find a projector to use. Weather permitting we
may have a new addition to the Opening Ceremony on Sunday morning. The
availability of a short suspension tuning loop, with advice from FC on
Saturday afternoon is still possible but not definite.
Trail Bosses for the Weekend
are:
PeeWee-Andy Anthony
Jr. Enduro-Jon Thomas
H.S.-Shawn Levesque
Classic Review
The Trail Bosses are constructing review/overview articles for
inclusion in our next newsletter. Some of the highpoints shared at the
meeting were: The rain prior to the event probably helped a lot with dust
but was not so much as to create quagmires (not to say that there werent a
few slick spots). Despite having about 50 less riders entered this year the
event still raised $135,000 for Cystic Fibrosis research. It appears that
having Rodney Smith address the riders and remind them that they were all
ambassadors for the sport was a real plus, the message was taken to heart
and most everyone was on their best behavior. Pretty much everyone made it
back to the track intact, there were some broken bikes but broken bodies
were in the minority (bruises and the occasional dislocation not
withstanding). On the Kids Classic there were some minor heat issues and
at least one rider needed the reminder that the water was for drinking and
didnt have to be saved to clean-up later. The kids appeared to appreciate
sharing lunch with the Big Bike Rally (I know that I appreciated the chance
to get off the DR and sit on a comfortable rock for a while).
Arrows vs. Ribboning: There were more compliments than
complaints on using ribbon for Sundays ride. There is still room for
improvement in the marking technique (longer ribbon and choice of color
for a start) but it does seem to work.
Neals Ride: As many know, Neal Lorenzen, Trail Boss for many
prior Classics offered to host a ride up north for the many who help to
make the Classic happen. The ride was described as awesome on Saturday and
a bit damp on Sunday. Commendations are in order for all who made this
event another success and specifically to Neal for rewarding them.
4 June 2008
June MVTR
Meeting
The meeting was called to order @ 20:12. A
brief review from the May meeting told that elections were held, during
which Tom, Jon and I were re-elected as President, Vice President and
Secretary respectively. Art is taking on the responsibility for membership
to give Dave Frasier a well-earned break. Lynn and Andy Anthony will be
tackling the task of keeping the treasury in order much to the relief of
Michelle and Doug McKinnon. Many thanks are due to these recently retired
officers for their combined decades of service to the club, if you find the
newfound free time hard to fill just let us know, well think of
something..
A reminder was made to riders that the new OHRV stickers are not
out yet. One of our members went the extra mile to research this and
learned that the fine for not having a sticker is now$120! That said, we
have Rally Permits in place for the Classic and the two club rides that will
take place next week. Under the permit an OHRV sticker is not required but
registration and inspection are still needed.
CLASSIC
STUFF
Registration will be up and running Friday
afternoon, closing promptly at 20:00. Suzukis Rodney Smith is scheduled to
arrive early enough to attend the Kids Classic Riders Meeting held @19:00
on Friday.
Trail Boss John said the Northern Loop was mostly arrowed,
problems caused by some less than exemplary behavior last year nearly cost
us 10 miles this year but that was averted at the last minute. There will be
Course Marshals posted in several locations this year to try and keep riders
on good behavior in sensitive areas since those who didnt recognize the
need to use control near houses also could not read the SLOW signs. Riders
will need to reach Reset 4 by 12:15 in order to not be detoured away from
Devils Den and directly to the lunch stop. John offered his opinion that
the only really hard Hero section was the one on Rocky Mountain, and that
dust may be a factor on some road sections.
The Banquet is set for 18:00 on Saturday; the tent will be open to
all after the meal to allow everyone to enjoy the presentations and viewing
of the pre-release version of the 2008 Classic Video. A reminder that
NO outside alcohol may be brought into the tent, the caterer has to
operate under NH Liquor Commission rules and this is one of them. After the
video and presentations the auction will be held.
The Southern Loop will be our first test of Tuckers Ribbon
Theory of Navigation; there will be minimal use of arrows. The
theory is fairly straightforward but does work best for those that read
and follow the route sheet. In brief, ribbons are kept on the riders
right (OK, I can already see some of you having problems), two ribbons will
be hung at intersections where a turn is to be made (Ts are not ribboned
because it should be obvious that you have to make a turn), riders need only
look to see whether a ribbon has been hung on the left or right trail to
know which way to go. Arrows will be placed at Resets and Hero sections. The
choice to use ribbons was made for two reasons, first to avoid conflict with
mountain bike tracks, which shared some sections of trail and secondly to
improve our ability to run under the radar of those who do not want us
using their woods.
The Big Bike Rally Trail Boss, Jeff Barr gave a very succinct
report, Its all set.
There will be informal groups helping at the track and in Alton.
If you have any free time available please stop by even if only for an hour.
Friday afternoon and evening as well as Saturday morning are always busy
times, stop in, look for someone you recognize or who is wearing an event
shirt. Help is always welcome!
Despite it not being Bike Week following the Classic this year
there will once again be two mid-week rides for MVTR members and invited
guests. Tuesdays ride will begin at Jim Nashs (following breakfast at the
Intervale Pancake House) @0900. Though not leading this years ride, Jim
said the loop would be 70-80 miles including some new trail. Thursdays ride
will begin at Jolly Roger. Steve says that its between 60 and 90 miles,
they will again split into a fast group and a slow group but he expects
both to finish about the same time (as usual). Each rides will be followed
by a BBQ (donations gratefully accepted).
EVERYTHING
ELSE
The next MVTR big Project will be the fast approaching Rocky
Mountain Weekend. Scheduled for 26 &27 July, there will be a Jr. Enduro and
PeeWee Hare Scrambles on Saturday and the full Hare Scrambles program on
Sunday. Factory Connection is again planning to be on-site with (hopefully,
still in planning) a test circuit available on Saturday afternoon for
riders to get their adjustments tuned. Scorbordz/HRP are expected as well.
BRP
7 May 2008
May MVTR Meeting:
Bruce was not in attendance so there isn't a
meeting report this month.....sorry.
2 April 2008
MVTR April Meeting
I have been quite lax
at getting this information processed and available. I apologize in advance
for any of this information that has already been superceded.
The meeting was called
to order at 19:17 hours by President Tom. First up to speak was Chris
Olivario, formerly of NHOHRV, now representing National Off Highway Vehicle
Conservation Council (NOHVCC). Chris spoke of the changing faces of OHRV
use, representation and legislation adding that he was working to get more
training/safety courses available.
Winter activities were next on
the agenda. It was noted that KPTR would be having their Awards Night on 5
April 2008. Also mentioned was that Seacoast Trail Riders have an annual
potluck dinner/get together in place of the January meeting. MVTR used
to have a similar winter activity but it apparently transcended the concept
and became the basis for soap opera/reality TV type behavior and faded
away. There is interest in resurrecting the concept (minus the sordid
details) but we need someone to step forward and take on the organizational
mantle.
Peter Anania presented
a report on the trails and tribulations of orchestrating this years Winter
Scramble. It was initially postponed due to an overabundance of snow, then
came issues with using National Forest Land, still they head about 4 miles
of trail but still too much snow. In the end, it was necessary to move the
event to Freetown, MA where they hosted 335 anxious to get out on the trail
riders including our own Tuck, Mark, Dwayne and Andy. They are looking to
try and schedule it for early January in 09.
Classic News and
Notes:
It looks (never a guarantee,
schedules get changed for the Pro-Riders) as though we will be seeing Rodney
Smith this year to represent American Suzuki, if possible he will be here on
Friday evening to participate in the Riders Meeting of the Kids Classic.
Devils Den should be included on this years Northern Loop with a trip over
Caverly Mtn. There should be no scheduling conflict with the Mtn. Bikers
over use of Bear Brook for the Southern Loop. The Big Bike Rally will be
using a version of the 2005 route. Kids Classic packets are not yet
available (remember this was as of April 2nd) but will be at the
next MVTR meeting. If your kid has not previously participated but wants
to this year contact the CFF office soon, spaces fill up early! There is
(was) a Classic Committee meeting scheduled for April 15th.
Despite it not being
Bike Week following the Classic this year, there will still be mid-week
rides planned on Tuesday and Thursday for MVTR riders and invited guests.
Peter Anania spoke to us again,
this time regarding his recent venture into dirt bike tours. Peter and his
partner Brad have formed a company to offer tours in Maine, NH, CO,NM and
UT. Colorado trips begin July 22nd and will run $1,300 to $1,500
plus airfare. Check them out at
www.SeaCoastTours.net.
Art reported that he had 50 to
60 MVTR racers entered into the NETRA database so far. If you race and want
championship points you HAVE
to be entered, it is YOUR
responsibility to insure that you are included so contact Art!
The end of Official Mud Season
(i.e. May 23rd) and consequently the reopening of Hop-Ev, is
approaching. In celebration Matt is planning a ride on that day (my notes
say Sunday the 23rd, cant be both idk), meeting at 0700 at the
park. Brian will be heading up the club 2nd Wednesday of the
month rides and Dave (Skid to those on NEDB) will be working on another date
(TBA).
Meeting adjourned at 20:50. Once
again I apologize for the tardiness in getting this together. If anyone took
notes at the May meeting (just too long a drive back from Key West for me to
make the meeting) please get them to me and I will put together a summary.
Bruce
2 January 2008
January MVTR Meeting
The first meeting of 2008 began at 19:18. In
consideration of the real winter weather we have been seeing the first
items on the agenda were all snow related.
Legislative
There is word that NH is looking at
creating/accepting OHRV reciprocity with ME. We havent seen anything in
writing and do not know for sure if it would apply to all OHRVs or just
snowmobiles.
Jim will be looking into the idea of MVTR
becoming an official snowmobile club again to meet the club member
requirements for snowmobile registration. We were in the past a part of the
state snowmobile association but our membership was dropped (by them)
because their insurance only covered groups whose events took place on snow
(dont know how that works out when they do trail work the rest of the
year).
More Snow
Austins Ride will be taking place on 23
February 2008. This is a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation fundraiser, which takes
place each year in Colebrook. MVTR has traditionally tried to support this
ride, this year Tom along with family and friends are planning to stage a
ride-in from Epsom or Chichester to Colebrook on the 22nd.
Plans are still being finalized; contact Tom if you would like to be
included.
With the record December snowfall putting a
damper on wheeled riding at Hop-Ev, Tom suggested that we look into the
concept of grooming the bike/atv trails there. This would not be the ski
slope type grooming as done by the snowmobile clubs, more along the lines of
compacting the fresh snowfall so that it could be ridden on wheels. Someone
(didnt catch who) will look into what can be done on narrow trails and what
equipment it would take to do it.
Trail Maintenance
The deadline for grant applications is 17
January 2008. Brian is finishing up our 2008 application. The big ticket
items on our request this year are a replacement for our 1998 Grizzly which
has worked long and hard on the trails and a larger trailer which could haul
the replacement along with the ATV wagon (dual axle, dump trailer which we
purchased through last years RTP grant program). Fitting everything into the
current trailer is best described as challenging; it can be done with
enough time, patience, planning and helping hands, but adds considerably to
an already long day of trail maintenance. (I should get down off the soapbox
now, but having been the first one to try and fit the new wagon in with all
the other gear I can attest that It aint easy.)
Classic Committee
Tucker reported that he will be submitting his
applications for trail use permits soon. He is hopeful that after being dis-allowed
from Bear Brook for two years we will be able to include it in this years
Southern Loop.
Andy and Lynn are still looking into the
feasibility of adding a PeeWee Classic to this years event, so far interest
from the usual PeeWee families surveyed does not seem high.
NETRA
Quite a few items were discussed at the
Sanctioning/Competition Meeting back in early December. Tucker told us that
he and Ken Law had considered exchanging dates for our respective events in
October 2008, they had agreed that the Rocky Mountain Enduro could take
place on October 12th (earlier in the season, longer travel for
most riders) and the Hoots Fall Final HS could run on Oct 26th.
When all was said and done though it did not get written down that way on
the schedule. He will be following up on this.
The Youth Committee has made the PeeWee program
more of a self governing entity, leaving the Competition Committee one less
thing to have to oversee. One change we will be seeing in PeeWee is that
promotional points will be falling by the wayside, promotion will be decided
upon by the committee on an individual basis utilizing an evaluation of the
riders ability and size. It is hoped that this will result in more
uniformity within the PeeWee groups.
A Recreational Committee is being formed to
help the clubs with non-competition events. J.D. has consented to represent
both MVTR and Seacoast TR (pending the Seacoast meeting on Thursday).
Tucker has reserved two tables for MVTR at the
Annual Banquet. His current list of attendees exceeds that by one. It is not
too late (but getting close) to add another table so if you plan on going
and would like to be part of the group please let him know soon.
Tuck also stated that MVTR was now a lifetime
member in NETRA.
Events, Past and Upcoming
Bob Landry commented on the MVTR Challenge
held on a cold December 2nd morning in Windham. Only about 15-17
riders participated on the now 5.1 mile course but all present had a good
time.
Bob also commented that there is currently too
much soft snow to ride on (in?). The forcast upcoming thaw should allow the
snow to settle and riding should begin once it refreezes. He said that there
are currently about 60 names on the contact list for winter riding, if you
want to ride be sure your name is among them by getting your e-mail address
to him at:

December MVTR Meeting
The December meeting was called to
order at 1925 hours by VP Jon Thomas (the pizza arrived late, meetings tend
to start more smoothly when most mouths are full, so.).
John OConner spoke first about the
annual NETRA Sanctioning Meeting, the club representatives were informed
that apparently we (the club) had forgotten to renew our membership, assured
that it was an oversight they were allowed to continue to participate for
the day. In light of this the club voted (not quite, but almost unanimously)
to spend the money to become a Life Member.
John also informed us that the 2008
Classic flyer is ready for mailing and that you should be going out soon,
also that CF is also going to be conducting an auction and giving away an
SUV (I didnt get hold of an auction flyer and dont have more details,
yet). John wrote a very nice article for the flyer and I was going to
reprint it here but realized that you are ALL Classic supporters and will be
receiving it soon.
Tucker was not able to attend the
meeting but sent his notes with Brian regarding our events for 2008. The
Classic was granted June 7th and 8th , The Rocky mountain Weekend H/S will
be on the 26th and 27th of July and the Rocky Mountain Enduro (all offroad)
will be on October 12th (?). The posted NETRA schedule shows our enduro as
being on October 26th, which makes sense, as it then would not conflict with
the Hoots Fall Final.
While he held the floor Brian also
updated us on the status of Hop-Ev. At the last work day about 100 of
bridging was installed (and weighted) on the River Loop. The now twice
rebuilt Stark Pond bridge has been weighted through the efforts of the
Bureau Of Trails. Another small section of bridging remains to be done and
several short bridges will be staked in place with rebar but we are
essentially done for 2007. This year we were able to not only repair damage
from a second 100 year flood but also proactively construct some
improvements. What will 2008 hold for us?
The MVTR Challenge took place in
Windham last weekend with about 20 riders participating. Pictures are
already up on our web site. Art (who trophied in the event) has been working
diligently to get our web site up to date, posting the long over-due
pictures.
Several MVTR members made their way to
the PSTR Toys for Tots ride in Freetown. It was described as a 30 mile loop
with sections that make our Rocky Mountain trails look to have been groomed
smooth.
On the legislative front, we were
advised that there is a bill, (LSR #2008-H-2442) which would prohibit ATVs
and Trail Bikes from using state-owned rail trails acquired by using federal
funds, the bill was filed by Representative Dresko of Hollis. There was no
news about Berlin, which came under the heading of no news is good news.
A unanimous nomination was made for
Neal to organize a club ride in Berlin.
The meeting was adjourned at 1950
hours.
